Windows 10 pre-launch
Microsoft have recently held a pre-launch event for the new Windows 10, the great news is that the start button is being re-instated and uodated to give a much better user experience.
Cortana, Microsofts new voice assistant will be integrated in all Windows 10 devices, Desktop, Laptop, Tablet and Smartphone. Cortana has also had an upgrade to make it more intellegent and more useful, initial results are very promising.
Windows 10 is still in development so the preview version we have seen is not ready for general release yet but it is definately a step in the right direction, and we expect it to become the de-facto standard operating system in a very short space of time.
There are many rumours about Windows 10 being offered as a free upgrade to users of older versions of Windows, however as of today Microsoft has still not made any official statement.
If you are looking for a new computer now then Windows 8.1 Pro comes with downgrade rights to Windows 7 Pro, this will probably give you the best chance of qualifying for a free upgrade should Microsoft offer it.
Once Windows 10 is released we will be offering an upgrade service, prices will be announced as soon as Microsoft give us a launch date, so keep looking back here or on our facebook site www.facebook.com/nortechcomputers for more information.
Windows 9 launch rumored
Microsoft are rumoured to be considering a launch on Windows 9 as early as this Autumn, the new operating system, a replacement for the widely criticised Windows 8, is likely to see a new online activation system ensuring that a single license cannot exist on 2 PC's at once.
Nortech Computers welcome developments on Windows 9 and hope that Microsoft have learned from the mistakes it made with Windows 8, we would like to see a full reinstatement of the Start menu making desktop mode again the default for both Desktop and laptop environments with the Metro screen utilised for Windows tablets.
We await a manufacturers release in the nesr future.
Windows 7 Outsells Windows 8
Even with the new Windows 8 and now 8.1 Windows 7 is still very much in demand by desktop and laptop users.
Since the launch of Windows 8 we have seen a large increase in the sale of Windows 7 machines, it seems that many people are now purchasing a Windows 7 desktop with our FREE 3 year warranty and an Andriod tablet for their mobile computing.
Windows 7 is still very much alive and kicking and available on selected laptops and All desktops from Nortech Computers.
Windows XP End Of Life
After 10 years of support, Microsoft has declared that Windows XP and Office 2003 will reach "end of life" on the 8th April 2014.
After this date Microsoft will no longer support these programs, meaning there will be no new security updates or content updates.
Running Windows XP and Office 2003 after 8th April may expose you or your company to potential risks such as:
- Security and compliance risks
- Lack of independent software vendor & hardware manufacturer’s support.
- Instability
- Bugs
It is strongly recommended that all users migrate away from Windows XP as soon as possible. This will help to mitigate the risks that come with running on an unsupported platform.
Nortech Computers can help you to deal with this by either upgrading your existing Windows XP machine or supplying a replacement machine and transferring all of your data and settings across.
Call 01275 818699 now for further information.
Android outsells iPad
In the second quarter of 2013 more Android tablets shipped worldwide than Apple iPads, on a ratio of nearly 2:1.
The last 12 month has seen aggressive pricing of Android tablets that has resulted in a 14% drop in iPad shipments over the same period. With a 10" Quad Core Android tablet available from Nortech Computers for only £159.99 the tablet market has never been better for PC users.
Twitter abuse: Man arrested in Bristol
A 32-year-old man has been arrested by police in Bristol in connection with threats made on Twitter.
He is suspected of offences against two women, who reported the allegations on 25 and 29 July.
The BBC understands it relates to threats made against Labour MP Stella Creasy and feminist campaigner Caroline Criado-Perez.
They are among a number of prominent women recently targeted online by anonymous abusers, so-called "trolls".
It is the third such arrest since allegations surfaced two weeks ago.
The man is being held under the Protection from Harassment Act 1997 and is due to be taken to a Bristol police station, the Metropolitan Police said.
Extra staff
There have been calls for Twitter to do more to prevent abuse after anonymous users of the site sent messages to well-known women threatening bomb and rape attacks.
Female journalists, columnists and the historian Mary Beard were all targeted.
Last weekend some users boycotted the site to protest against trolling - the practice of insulting or intimidating others, usually under a pseudonym, to provoke a reaction.
Twitter attracted media and police attention after campaigner Ms Criado-Perez was targeted by trolls when she successfully lobbied for a woman's face to be pictured once more on UK banknotes.
A 21-year-old man was arrested in Manchester on 28 July after Ms Criado-Perez reported the abuse to police, while a 25-year-old man was held by Northumbria Police on 30 July in connection with the allegations as well as those against Ms Creasy.
Twitter has drafted in extra staff to deal with the levels of abuse and has moved to clarify its reporting procedures.
Last week the company apologised to the women affected, saying what had happened was "unacceptable".
